Energy: Oil & Gas and Renewables

Our engineering skills, proximity to North Sea energy resources, port infrastructure and easy road access have made Northumberland a natural home for the UK’s offshore energy industry. The National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec) is located in Blyth, giving Northumberland a pivotal role in the development and commercialisation of offshore renewables. Industry-leading companies include Advanced Engineering Solutions, PII Pipeline Solutions, CMP Products, Avid Technology and Narec.

National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec)

  • A controlled development environment for the marine and offshore industry supply chains to undertake research, testing and sea trials of new equipment
  • Blyth
  • 90 employees in Northumberland

£150m has been invested at Narec to provide the most comprehensive open-access test and research facilities anywhere in the world for the scale-up of offshore renewable energy technologies.
These reliability, design verification and accelerated life testing facilities have been built to meet demand for the development of bigger offshore turbines and bigger blades.
Narec has adapted three docks for testing subsea equipment, such as: rock trenchers, ROVs, tether management systems, sonar devices and robots. The docks are complemented by electrical and materials laboratories for the development of power take-off systems, failure analysis, materials and coatings selection, cable joint integrity tests and electrical grid integration.
The proposed Blyth Offshore Wind Demonstration Site is the largest open-access demonstration site in the UK, and is now in a position to leverage the additional investment that will make it a world-leading proving ground for novel and cost reducing offshore wind technologies.
