Geneius Laboratories, a world-leading DNA-based food and drinks testing company, has leased a 20,000 sq. ft. building at Colbourne Crescent, Nelson Park, Cramlington as part of its ambitious expansion plans.
Founded in the North East and spun out of Newcastle University Geneius is now able to automate more of its key processes and increase its capacity. The company's move from the University to the Cramlington site is a step-change providing higher specification facilities for its current work whilst also allowing for any future growth plans. It has been supported in this new development by funding from Arch, The Northumberland Development Company.
Professor Jerry Barnes managing director of Geneius said: “The building, previously subject to a £3m investment to convert it into a state-of-the-art facility, represents a perfect opportunity for us. With help from Northumberland County Council and Arch, we were able to adapt the facility to our specific use and be up and running in double quick time.”
“Our unique DNA-based methods deliver unprecedented levels of accuracy and speed for food and drink producers and major retailers. This service is supported by our advanced online/offline software, which has been designed to provide quick and easy sample submission, reporting and presentation solutions."
Cllr Dave Ledger, Deputy Leader of Northumberland County Council and Arch Chair said: "Geneius is exactly what its name suggests, a first class business which has seen a gap in the marketplace and exploited it to maximum impact. We are delighted the business is now in Northumberland and has the opportunity to put down roots well into the future. It is a very welcome addition to Northumberland's growing reputation in the science-related industries."
As part of its business Geneius also provides award-winning services through CSI-style investigative tools to explore any microbe or other issues for clients in either a factory and supply chain environment.
Professor Barnes added: “The acquisition of this laboratory space has enabled us to fulfill our expansion plans ahead of time. We have relocated, attained the rigorous accreditations necessary for our operation, and continued to deliver our services without a pause – a success for all the agencies involved and a tribute to our team at Geneius.”
Geneius position as a leading edge company has recently been confirmed when it received the 2014 Northumberland Business Award for Innovation at Linden Hall in November.
